When it comes to Sprint 0, many teams debate whether QAs should even be involved.

Some argue,

“There’s no real testing to do, so why bother?”

Others see it as an opportunity to lay a solid foundation for quality from day one. So, is Sprint 0 just a waste of time for QAs?

Absolutely not! Let’s break down the critical role QAs play in this often-overlooked phase and why their contribution matters.

What Is Sprint 0?

Sprint 0 is the preparatory phase before the development team officially starts building the product. It’s where the groundwork is laid — requirements are defined, environments are set up, tools are selected, and planning takes shape.

While no functional product exists at this stage, quality should not take a back seat.

Why Sprint 0 Feels Like a Waste for QAs

On the surface, it seems like QAs have little to do:

  • There’s no code to test.
  • Functional testing is weeks away.
  • Developers and Product Owners appear to dominate the discussions.
